Newcastle division’s assistant division commissioner, Rosie Howells has won this year’s Civic Pride Award at the Newcastle Local Heroes awards.

The category was open to groups or individuals who have done something that has a positive impact on the people who live, work or visit the borough. The civic pride winner will have helped their local area flourish and showcased the borough in a positive light. Rosie was nominated for having a lasting impact on Girlguiding in the Westlands. As well as helping girls to develop skills and form friendships, Rosie has ensured that everyone can take part, through fundraising, and set up a new unit enabling guides to take on leadership roles. Despite a busy schedule, she volunteers countless hours each week and supports the wider network.

The new unit set up refers to the Rangers unit we were able to open because her Guides just didn’t want to leave!

This is the first Civic Pride award named after the council’s new initiative to boost pride in Newcastle-under-Lyme and strengthen its reputation as a place which is clean, safe and friendly.

Also shortlisted was Freya Follwell, one of Newcastle division’s young leaders & Ranger, for the Young Heroes award. She was highly commended in her category.

Many congratulations to both Rosie and Freya for their hard work and dedication to local guiding.
