Whittington Trefoil Guild recently visited Seal Brook Woodland School to learn about the science behind fire. Teacher Matt explained to them about ignition sources and different tinders. Everyone had a go at making a spark by striking a flint – some more succesfully than others! – and transferring the spark to a ‘nest’ of straw.

Following that the ladies tried a more modern rod and striker and used different tinders to see the difference between them. The finale was making and lighting our own fires. It was a fun evening where everyone learnt something new.
